The Perth Magistrates Court has been told a man accused of organising the asylum seeker boat involved in the Christmas Island tragedy will be pleading not guilty.

Ali Khorram Heydarkhani, 40, was extradited from Indonesia earlier this year to face 89 charges of people smuggling.

He is accused of organising boatloads of asylum seekers to travel from Indonesia to Australia between June last year and January this year.

One of the boats smashed into rocks at Christmas Island in December, killing about 50 people.

Heydarkhani appeared in court via video link from prison this morning.

His lawyer said his client would be pleading not guilty to all the charges.

Heydarkhani was remanded in custody and will appear in court again in September.
