The Supreme Court in Perth has heard that thwarted business deals are alleged to be the motive for the murder of a man who has been missing for more than a year.

Forty-five year-old Craig Puddy disappeared in May last year and his business partner Cameron Mansell is due stand trial in September for his murder.

Mr Mansell has now applied to be released on bail because he and his lawyers say they cannot prepare his defence properly.

They say the motive that is being alleged means Mr Mansell has to examine a vast amount of material which he cannot do in jail.

Prosecutors have opposed the application, arguing there was a risk Mr Mansell would flee the State, because not long after Mr Puddy disappeared, he travelled to the eastern states using a false name.

However Mr Mansell's lawyer Tim Saayman says at the time his client was free to leave WA and he did so because he believed there were people who wanted to do him serious harm.

Mr Saayman made only a brief comment as he left court.

"Well I can only make the comment that was made in the media release, that it's his right to apply for bail as per every defendant's right."

Justice John McKechnie will hand down his decision next week.
